Sofferenze a catena: essere Afroamericani negli USA

Immagina di aver appena superato la tanto tragica quanto rivoluzionaria scomparsa di un tuo caro parente, il cui assassino è stato da poco condannato ad una pena a tuo avviso ingiusta, di star entrando nella camera di tua figlia di quattro anni nella notte di Capodanno e trovarla in un lago di sangue, mentre pronuncia le parole: “Papà, mi hanno sparato!”.

Questa è la vicenda accaduta la notte del 1° gennaio 2022 a Derrick Delane, padre di Arianna Delane, pronipote del defunto George Floyd. Un uomo difficile da dimenticare, la cui morte, avvenuta per mano dell’ex poliziotto di Minneapolis Derek Chauvin, il quale ha tenuto premuto il suo ginocchio contro collo della vittima per ben 9 minuti e 29 secondi senza alcuna pietà e ne ha provocato il soffocamento, ha fatto da apripista ad una serie di proteste contro le discriminazioni razziali in tutto il mondo nel 2020. Il tormento dei Floyd sembrava essersi placato dopo la condanna a 22 anni di carcere del colpevole, anche se l’accusa aveva chiesto almeno 30 anni. Evidentemente era solo un falso accenno di tranquillità…

 La famiglia ha subìto l’ennesima disgrazia in seguito ad una sparatoria avvenuta all’esterno della loro casa di Houston, in Texas, alle 3 del mattino, senza un apparente motivo. L’ ipotesi delle autorità e delle vittime (4 adulti e 2 bambini) è che la loro abitazione sia stata presa di mira. La bambina, fortunatamente, è sopravvissuta alle numerose ferite (la rottura di tre costole e la perforazione del fegato e di un polmone), grazie ad un intervento al Texas Children’s Hospital, dove è stata portata dai suoi familiari a causa del ritardo dei soccorsi. Nella speranza che la piccola si riprenda presto, sua nonna LaTonya Floyd, sorella di George, ha dichiarato di aver sempre lottato per la giustizia e non smetterà mai di farlo.

A chain of sufferings: what it’s like to be an African American in the USA

Imagine that you’ve just overcome the tragic and, at the same time, revolutionary death of a dear relative of yours, whose murderer was recently sentenced to an unfair punishment. You’re entering your 4-year-old daughter’s room at New Year’s Eve and you find her in a pool of blood, while she utters the words: “Daddy, I’ve been hit!”

That is what happened on the night of January 1 2022 to Derrick Delane, father of Arianna Delane, George Floyd’s great-granddaughter. A difficult man to forget, whose death led the way to a series of protests against racial discrimination in 2020 all over the world. His homicide took place by the hand of the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee pressed against the neck of the victim for 9 minutes and 29 seconds mercilessly and caused his suffocation. The Floyds’ torment seemed to have subsided after the killer’s sentence to 22 years in prison, even if the prosecution had asked for at least 30 years. It was clearly a false hint of peace…

The family has suffered yet another misfortune following a shooting that took place outside their home in Houston, Texas, at 3 a.m., for no apparent reason. The hypothesis of the authorities and victims (4 adults and 2 children) is that their house had been targeted. Luckily, the girl survived numerous injuries (three broken ribs, the puncture of the liver and a lung), thanks to a surgery at the Texas Children’s Hospital, where her family had to take her by themselves, due to the rescuers’ delay. In the hope that the little girl will recover soon, her grandmother LaTonya Floyd, George’s sister, has declared that she has always fought for justice and she’ll never stop doing it.
