Thomas de Maizière’s Leitkultur

April 30, 2017: It happened again, Thomas de Maizière starts another of his endless Leitkultur-discussions…

But what is that German Leitkultur?

This oh so important Leitkultur is exactly that culture which makes you German, so that means it has to be typical German, right?

Well, not quite correct, because according to Maizière`s “10 point plan”, typical German isn’t reserving sunbeds with a towel, consuming 3 fried sausages and 10 beer per week or preparing a house-made potato salad and eating it while watching “Tatort”, instead typical German are things like shaking hands when greeting someone, common knowledge or proudly presenting the German Flag and loudly singing the German national anthem, because after all this is part of our patriotism.

But what is the purpose of this Leitkultur?

Maizière wants to help immigrants and us “unusual-Germans” finding the true German culture. If that is not a reason for capers. It finally happens! Finally, we are not being individuals anymore! Who wants to have a multifaceted Germany with different manners and conventions within particular states after all? Exactly, no one. The world is the most fun when everyone is completely alike and if you don’t want to dance a weird dance to folk music while being drunk, then it’s your problem and so you can’t be a German, doesn’t matter from where you are.

Another criterion is religion.

You may now think that religion isn’t just part of the German Culture, but then you didn’t listen quite well, because Maizière names the essential difference to other religions.

We are not Burka

Grammar may not be his strength, but he just wants that we “Germans” show our face, ignoring the religious reasons, he puts the law over religion, who comes here has to fit in, otherwise ha can leave.

Finally, let’s check his ten-point-plan:

Point 1: You prefer to fist bump your friends for greeting or just don’t really like body contact? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 2: Hypotenuse, divided by opposite leg equals what? You don’t know that? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 3: Until now you have just visited school and so couldn’t participate in society? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 4: You don’t want to confess to Germany’s NS-past because you weren’t born back then? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 5: German folk music just isn’t really your taste and it maybe even annoys you when you hear it? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 6: You just don’t like Christian religion and you are an atheist? Well then you are a heretic and must leave the German country.

Point 7: You hate violence and like to solve conflicts with words? Well, congratulations, you can stay here.

Point 8: You don’t have the national flag hanging from your balcony and you don’t know the German national anthem? Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 9: You just feel German and not European? How can that be? After all, Germany is the most European country of Europe! Well then you must leave the German country.

Point 10: You are just not into carnival or Wies’n? But they are part of our collective memory! Well then you must leave the German country.

Looking at Maizière’s Ten-Point-Plan we see that it’s not working quite well, because after all culture is individual and we are all different.

De Maizières „Leitkultur“

Die folgende Glosse reflektiert meine persönliche Meinung und kennzeichnet nicht notwendigerweise in allem den Standpunkt der Redaktion von trait d’union.

30. April 2017: Schon wieder ist es passiert, Thomas de Maizière beginnt seine x-te Leitkultur-Debatte…

Aber was ist überhaupt diese deutsche „Leitkultur“?

Diese ach so essentiell wichtige Leitkultur ist die jene Kultur die einen zum Deutschen macht, dann muss diese Leitkultur also auch typisch deutsch sein, oder?

Nun ja nicht ganz richtig, typisch deutsch ist nämlich laut Maizières „Zehn-Punkte-Plan“, nicht das Besetzen von Sitzplätzen mittels Handtüchern, das Konsumieren von 3 Bratwürsten und 10 Bier in der Woche oder einen hausgemachten Kartoffelsalat zu zubereiten und diesen während dem Sonntag-Tatort zu verspeisen, sondern selbstverständlich so Dinge wie sich zur Begrüßung die Hand geben, Allgemeinwissen oder stolz die deutsche Nationalflagge zu präsentieren und laut die deutsche Nationalhymne nach zu brüllen, denn dies ist schließlich Teil unseres Patriotismus.

Doch wozu dient diese Leitkultur eigentlich?

Maizière will mit ihr Migranten und uns „Nicht-Normal-Deutschen“ dabei helfen, zur wahren deutschen Kultur zu finden. Wenn das nicht mal ein Grund für Freudensprünge ist. Endlich passiert es! Endlich werden wir entindividualisiert! Wer möchte denn schon ein vielfältiges Deutschland mit unterschiedlichen Sitten und Bräuchen innerhalb einzelner Bundesländer? Natürlich, niemand. Die Welt macht doch am meisten Spaß, wenn alle identisch sind und gleich handeln und wenn du keine Lust hast sturzbesoffen zu Schlagerliedern eine Polonäse zu bilden, dann ist das dein Problem und dann kannst du auch kein deutscher sein, völlig gleich woher du kommst.

Ein weiteres wichtiges Kriterium nennt Maizière jedoch noch…Religion

Wer sich jetzt denkt, Religion sei nicht nur in Deutschland Teil der Kultur, der hat dem Herrn Innenminister wohl nicht richtig zugehört, denn dieser nennt den entscheidenden Unterschied zu anderen Religionen:

Wir sind nicht Burka

Zwar hat es Maizière mit deutscher Grammatik ironischer Weise selber nicht so und es wäre wahrscheinlich schlauer gewesen, hätte man ihn statt der Stelle des Innenministers, einen Duden gegeben. Aber dort wo es an Grammatik fehlt, strotz es doch sicher nur vor Sinn, nicht wahr? Maizière will damit sagen, dass wir „Deutschen“ unser Gesicht zeigen sollen und dabei sind ihm die religiösen Gründe völlig egal, er stellt das Recht über alle religiösen Regeln im staatlichen und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenleben, denn wer hierher kommt hat sich unsere Sitten und Bräuche anzugewöhnen, wer das nicht will soll gleich wieder gehen.

Gehen wir abschließend Maizières Plan noch einmal durch

Punkt 1: Du gibst deinen Freunden zur Begrüßung lieber die Faust oder hast es einfach nicht so mit Körperkontakt? Dann verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 2: Gegenkathete durch Hypotenuse ergibt was? Das weißt du nicht? Das ist doch Allgemeinwissen! Verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 3: Du hast bis jetzt nur die Schule besucht und konntest deswegen noch keine nennenswerte Leistung vollbringen? Dann verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 4: Du willst dich nicht zu Deutschlands NS-Vergangenheit bekennen, weil du damals noch nicht geboren warst und nichts dafürkannst? Dann verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 5: Deutsche Volksmusik ist nicht so dein Geschmack und es nervt dich wenn sie irgendwo ertönt? Dann verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 6: Du hast es nicht so mit christlicher Religion und bist Atheist? Du bist ein Ketzer, also verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 7: Du hasst Gewalt und löst Konflikte lieber mit Worten anstatt mit der Faust? Dann Glückwunsch, du darfst tatsächlich hierbleiben.

Punkt 8: Du hast keine Nationalflagge vom Balkon hängen oder kennst nicht  die Nationalhymne? Dann verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 9: Du fühlst dich schlichtweg einfach nur deutsch und nicht europäisch? Wie kann das denn bitte sein, schließlich ist Deutschland das europäischste Land Europas. Verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

Punkt 10: Du kannst dich einfach nicht für Karneval oder die Wiesn begeistern? Aber das sind doch Teile unseres kollektiven Gedächtnisses! Verlasse bitte den deutschen Boden.

An diesem Test können wir sehen das Maizières Zehn-Punkte-Plan vielleicht nicht ganz so gut funktioniert wie erwartet, schließlich ist Kultur lebendig, sie verändert sich, man kann nicht einfach eine Leitkultur vorgeben an die sich alle zu halten haben, denn wir sind alle unterschiedlich. Und was ich persönlich von Thomas de Maizière halte möchte ich lieber nicht sagen, denn ein Teil meiner Antwort könnte ihn verunsichern.
