THE FATE OF THE WORLD IN OUR HANDS

Our planet is at risk and we see it every day. Today we are facing increasingly extreme, frequent and devastating climatic phenomena. The greenhouse effect and the resulting global warming are causing glaciers to melt and the ozone layer to thin. Moreover, people are not doing much to help safeguard the land and our health. The excessive use of plastic, which also pollutes the seas along with other waste, is worsening an already critical situation.

As a result of the interview that some of my classmates and I conducted with an expert in the field, we were able to get some answers to the many questions we had. First he started talking about the effect of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels. This factor is accelerating a natural process that would have been much slower. He then explained that it would be better to avoid the use of packaging or shopping online that could be convenient, but that can easily pollute the environment, not to mention the excessive use of combustion cars or household appliances. The goal is to abandon fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy sources and to make each of us responsible and committed to fighting climate change.

At the end of the interview we were told that young people, compared to the elderly generations, are much more involved in this topic and can do much more. Many studies show that young people are more aware and concerned than adults about the risks of climate change. For us, this is a period of growth and therefore we tend to be very aware of our surroundings. Secondly, we are much more involved because we are more and more in contact with the outside world, also through the media and social networks. So we are the ones who can make a difference.

IL DESTINO DEL MONDO NELLE NOSTRE MANI

Il nostro pianeta è a rischio e lo vediamo giorno dopo giorno. Oggi siamo di fronte a fenomeni climatici sempre più estremi, frequenti e devastanti. L’effetto serra e il conseguente riscaldamento globale stanno provocando lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai e l’assottigliamento dello strato di ozono. Inoltre non ci stiamo impegnando molto per aiutare a salvaguardare la terra e la nostra salute. L’uso smodato di plastica che, insieme agli altri rifiuti, sta inquinando i mari, peggiora una situazione già critica.

In seguito all’intervista che io e alcuni miei compagni abbiamo realizzato con un esperto del settore, siamo riusciti a dare alcune risposte alle molte domande che ci siamo posti. In primo luogo abbiamo iniziato a parlare dell’effetto dei gas serra in atmosfera, soprattutto a causa dei combustibili fossili. Questo fattore sta velocizzando un processo naturale che altrimenti sarebbe stato molto più lento. In seguito ci è stato spiegato che sarebbe meglio evitare l’utilizzo di imballaggi, lo shopping online, che può essere conveniente ma può facilmente danneggiare l’ambiente, l’uso eccessivo delle auto a combustione e degli elettrodomestici. L’obiettivo è abbandonare i combustibili fossili a favore delle fonti energetiche rinnovabili e rendere ognuno di noi responsabile e impegnato nella lotta al cambiamento climatico.

Al termine dell’intervista ci è stato detto che i giovani, rispetto agli adulti sono molto più coinvolti e partecipi. Secondo molti studi, noi giovani siamo più consapevoli e preoccupati per i rischi legati al cambiamento climatico. Per noi questo è un periodo di crescita e perciò tendiamo a stare molto attenti all’ambiente che ci circonda. In secondo luogo, noi ragazzi siamo molto più coinvolti perché ci troviamo sempre più a contatto con il mondo esterno, anche attraverso i media e i social network. Quindi siamo proprio noi a poter fare la differenza.
