Last Generation: climate terrorists, extremists or realists?

Why Last Generation? Because "We are the first generation to feel the beginning of climate collapse  and the last generation that can do something about it." It`s the explanation given by  a member of a group of climate activists on why they picked such a particular name. They are young citizens who have acted to sensitize the society on climate change and environmental injustice through actions of civil disobedience to pressure governments and  promote green politics. Since the beginning they have demonstrated the nature of their "modus operandi", blocking traffic on highways, promoting hunger strikes and interrupting artistic and sport events but … recently they have even "entered" museums. Last Generation in fact, has been around since September 2021 but it has been brought to international attention after having launched mashed potatoes on a painting of Monet. Why did they choose to act this way? Why art?

According to the activists,art is worth only if there are people able to look at it, so that`s why a painting is worth much less if in our everyday life we don`t have water or food. Additionally the chosen painting portrays a great harvest: an image that in real life we won`t be able to look at anymore, if we don`t act responsibly. These acts of protest, that had begun in 2022, have received a huge backlash from various political groups that have condemned their extreme ways. Green Party and Fridays for Future have taken their distance from Last Generation, defining their protest "elitist and hypocritical", a protest that makes people`s lives even more difficult, creating discord and disunity, while the climate issue requires collaboration. Nevertheless, the members of Last Generation feel an urgent need for intervention: "We do have a choice: collective action or collective suicide. Just as we defend our artistic heritage, we have to dedicate ourselves to the care and protection of the planet that we share with the rest of the world.”

This is the unquestionable opinion expressed by one of the members of the group but ... is it the right way to attract attention?

Ultima Generazione: terroristi climatici, estremisti o realisti?

Perché Ultima Generazione? Perché: "Siamo la prima generazione a sentire l`inizio del collasso climatico e l`ultima generazione che può fare qualcosa a riguardo". È la spiegazione data da uno dei membri di questo gruppo di attivisti climatici al perché della scelta di un nome così particolare. Si tratta di giovani cittadini e cittadine che si sono mobilitati per sensibilizzare la società sui cambiamenti climatici e l`ingiustizia ambientale attraverso azioni di disobbedienza civile per fare pressione sulle politiche green e sul governo. Sin dal principio hanno dimostrato la natura del proprio "modus operandi" bloccando il traffico delle autostrade, promuovendo scioperi della fame e interrompendo manifestazioni artistiche e sportive… da poco sono "entrati" anche nei musei. Ultima Generazione di fatto esiste dal settembre 2021 ma è arrivata all`attenzione internazionale dopo aver lanciato purè di patate contro un dipinto di Monet. Come mai hanno deciso di compiere quest`azione? Perché proprio l`arte?

Secondo gli attivisti l`arte ha valore solo quando ci sono delle persone a guardarla, per cui un dipinto varrà poco se nella vita quotidiana mancheranno acqua e cibo. Inoltre il quadro di Monet mostra un grande raccolto: un`immagine che nella realtà non si potrà guardare più,  se non si agisce responsabilmente. Gli atti di protesta, iniziati nel 2022, hanno incontrato un largo dissenso da parte di diversi gruppi politici che hanno condannato la loro modalità così estrema. Green Party e Fridays for future hanno preso le distanze da Ultima Generazione, definendo la loro, una protesta "elitaria e ipocrita" che rende ancora più difficoltosa la vita delle persone, creando così divisione e non unione, mentre la questione climatica richiede collaborazione da parte di tutti. D’altro canto i membri di Ultima Generazione sentono un bisogno urgente di intervento: "Abbiamo una scelta: azione collettiva o suicidio collettivo. Nello stesso modo in cui difendiamo il nostro patrimonio artistico, dovremmo dedicarci alla cura e alla protezione del pianeta che condividiamo con il resto del mondo". 

Questo è il principio direi inopinabile espresso da un membro del gruppo, ma… è davvero il modo giusto per farsi ascoltare?
